Covenant Loving God (4)

Malachi 2:10-16
Years ago, a British newspaper carried the story of Dorothy and Oliver Naylor, a couple in their 70s, who decided to take a day trip together. On the way to their destination, they had tire trouble. Oliver pulled into a garage to get it fixed. After the repair, Oliver hopped into the car and took off...without Dorothy, his wife of over 40 years. He left Dorothy out front of the station.
Oliver drove the reaming 17 miles to their destination before realizing she was gone. When he pulled into the town he asked, "Where do you want to go first?" Not getting a response after several queries, he turned to look in the back seat, where she liked to travel so she could stretch out, nap, and read, to check on her. He was surprised to find that she was not there.
Oliver managed to leave behind what should have been very dear to him...his wife.
In this part of Malachi's prophecy, he speaks to a group of men who had deliberately left behind and abandoned what should have been near and dear to them...their wives and families. It strained their relationship with the Lord and brought His displeasure on them.
In our study, we have seen the people guilty of cheap worship. The priest guilty of showing contempt for ministry. Now, we discover the people displayed a callous disregard for covenant relationships and commitments.
Malachi 2.10-16 - "Do we not all have one father? Has not one God created us? Why do we deal treacherously each against his brother so as to profane the covenant of our fathers?11 Judah has dealt treacherously, and an abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah has profaned the sanctuary of the Lord which He loves and has married the daughter of a foreign god. 12 As for the man who does this, may the Lord cut off from the tents of Jacob everyone who awakes and answers, or who presents an offering to the Lord of hosts.
