If you've ever learned a foreign language, you know that it's difficult. Some people are really good at languages, naturally, but other people aren't. I'm not very good at languages. When I've traveled to other countries like Venezuela, Mexico, the Philippines, Kenya, and China, I had to learn some words. Now, Spanish is a lot easier than Chinese, I can tell you that for sure. Once I got past "hello" in Chinese, I was done. People from other countries, when they come here and they have to learn English, they say English is a very hard language to learn. And one of the reasons that English is a hard language is because we have idioms in English. You know, an idiom is a grouping of words that we know what they mean, but the words don't seem to match up with the meaning.

For instance, we talk about, "You're pulling my leg!" Well, we know what that means. Somebody is feeding us a line. They're teasing, or whatever. But to a person that doesn't know English and doesn't know the idiom, "You're pulling my leg," they would be like, "No, I'm not. I'm not doing that at all." Well, I like to find out where some of these things originated.

We say, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth!" So, you can imagine somebody coming from another country learning English, and you tell them, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." They would be like, "I don't understand that at all." Well, that comes from a time when people could look at horses and they would look at their teeth to determine how old the horse was. And, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" is, hey, if someone gifts you a gift, don't criticize it. Don't look that gift horse in the mouth; just receive it.

How about this phase, "Pull out all the stops!" We use that phrase. We know what that means. That's an organ phrase. You know, we have our big organ recital coming up on Sunday night to break in the new orga ...
