If you have your Bible, please turn to John chapter 7. We've been in John chapter 7 for a good while. It's 53 verses. We want to talk about Christ and Controversy.

I don't know if you have noticed, but as you read through the gospels, especially the gospel of John, you find that Jesus, who is God in the flesh, who is love personified, because the Bible says God is love, He has a lot of difficulty with the Jews. And when the Bible talks about the Jews, when John talks about the Jews, he's talking about the Jewish religious leaders. He's always in conflict with them. And He has so much conflict that He ends up being crucified.

A retired pastor was talking to a friend, and he was kind of thinking over his pastorage, and he said to his friend, "You know, really, when I look over my pastorate, I had a very peaceful pastorate." He was very proud of that, that he had a peaceful pastorate. I remember hearing that story, and I thought, that's interesting, because Christianity, we preach peace, but Christianity is not very peaceful in terms of how it divides people. Jesus said in Matthew chapter 10, verse 34, "Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." And Jesus and the message of Jesus and the gospel of Jesus, it divides. It creates conflict. It creates controversy. Why? Because it says to people, "You are sinners who need to repent. And if you don't repent, you'll, you're going to face a Christless hell." Well, that is an offensive message to people, and people get upset at that. When the apostle Paul went out on his missionary journeys, he would end up in jail most of the time because, why? There would be an uproar. And as they said in the Book of Acts chapter 17, when he went to Thessalonica, they got upset at him. And the charge against Paul and Silas was, "These men, who have upset the world, have come here a ...
