Psalm 23
Psalm 23 is one of the Scriptures that has touched my life.
Like so many of you I have walked in the valley of the
shadow of death. And like many of you I have needed the
presence of the Shepherd to help me on my way. Let's read
the Psalm together:
(Psalms 23 NIV) " The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be
in want. {2} He makes me lie down in green pastures, he
leads me beside quiet waters, {3} he restores my soul. He
guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
{4} Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of
death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod
and your staff, they comfort me. {5} You prepare a table
before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head
with oil; my cup overflows. {6} Surely goodness and love
will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in
the house of the LORD forever."
To me verse 4 is the most powerful verse in this psalm.
{4} Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of
death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod
and your staff, they comfort me.
This verse describes a valley which is covered over by the
darkness of a shadow. It's the shadow of death. Wherever
you walk in that valley the shadow of death darkens your
way. The light has been dimmed. You can't see as well as
you're used to seeing - there's just not enough light. Even
familiar places take on a sense of strangeness. You feel
alone. You feel afraid. You no longer feel yourself.
Sometimes you think you're losing your mind. Sometimes you
think you'll never leave this valley - that for the rest of
your life you'll always been under the shadow of death.
Like so many of you I've walked in the valley under the
shadow of death several times.
I entered the valley when at the age of 12 my mother died.
Again 2 years ...
