Malachi 3:13-18
Years ago, I heard a testimony of a man that was voted, in 1986, as the National Teacher of the Year. His name is Guy Dowd. Some of you may remember that Guy came to our church probably 15 years ago and shared his testimony. He's shared his testimony literally thousands of times. He shared it on Focus on the Family, and it was the number one requested testimony of all time for Focus on the Family. Well, in Guy's story, he talks about growing up as kind of a big, sloppy, heavyset kid and all the difficulties that were associated with that. When he graduated college and started working as a teacher, he was just way overweight. The big, sloppy, overweight turned into obese. Guy said that he was out eating dinner at his favorite spot in Brainerd, Minnesota, called Taco Town. He said, "I was having a full plate of spaghetti, along with half a chicken." He said, "I was going to go home, as was my nightly habit, and have three scoops of Butter Brickle ice cream." He said, "As I was walking out of the restaurant, I literally bumped into one of my former students. We met at the door. And she bumped into me, and she said to, "Well, Mr. Dowd, are you still teaching?" Said, "Yes, Julie, I'm getting ready to start my second year." He thought it was kind of funny because, "I'm like 23 years old. Yeah, I'm still teaching." She said to him, "Well, Mr. Dowd, are you married yet?" He said, "No, Julie, I'm not married yet." And she looked at him, and she said, "You know, Mr. Dowd, you'd be kind of cute if you lost a hundred pounds." He said, "Kind of cute! Why bother?" I mean, to go through the agony of losing a hundred pounds so at the end of it you can be kind of cute. But that spurred something in the heart of Guy Dowd, and the next day he began a diet, and Guy lost 127 pounds. A pretty awesome story.
