And The Word Became Flesh
John 17:1-5
Pastor Jeff Schreve
If you have your Bible, please turn to John chapter 17. It was a few years ago when I was called to the hospital to visit a man who was on his deathbed. I knew that it wasn't going to be long. The son was in the room, and he welcomed me in there. And, and he wanted me to be in there, but I almost felt like I was intruding. His dad couldn't communicate, but we trusted that his dad could still hear. And this son was pouring out his heart to his dad, telling his dad how much he loved him, and how he was so proud of him, and was proud to be his son. And it was one of those things, it's like this is almost too personal for me to be here. I felt like I needed to leave, but I wanted to stay to hear that, and he wanted me to stay. And it was very, very special.
John chapter 17 is that special, intimate passage of Scripture where Jesus is letting us hear His prayer as He talks to His Father just hours before the cross. John 17 is called the "Holy of Holies" in the life of Jesus, as our great high priest comes before His Father. The greatest prayer in the Bible, longest recorded prayer from the lips of Jesus, John 17. And in John 17, He prays for Himself. He prays for His disciples. And He prays for us, for those who will believe in Him through the word of the disciples.
We want to look at the prayer Jesus prays for Himself, because we can learn some wonderful lessons about the Lord Jesus and lessons that speak to us concerning our relationship with the Father.
John 17, beginning in verse 1, "These things Jesus spoke, and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, 'Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your son, that the Son may glorify You, even as You gave Him authority over all mankind to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I glorified You on the ...
