When Slaves Become Friends (1 of 70)
And The Word Became Flesh
John 15:9-17
Pastor Jeff Schreve

If you have your Bible, please turn to John chapter 15. We are discussing the night in which Jesus was betrayed. The synoptics, Matthew, Mark, and Luke don't tell us near the information that John does. And John gives us lots of teaching that took place on that Thursday night before they went to the Garden of Gethsemane and before Jesus was betrayed by Judas and arrested.

But in John 15, beginning in verse 9, we read these words - and you'll notice that John 14, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 are almost all in red because it's just the words of Jesus. He says this: "Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you. Abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full. This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing, but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. You did not choose Me, but I chose you, and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. This I command you, that you love one another."

Father, teach us tonight from Your Word, and help us to rightly and accurately divide the Word, the Word of truth. And, Lord, do a deep work in our hearts as we learn, as we grow, and as we put Your Word into practice. For we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
