If you have your Bible, please turn to the little Book of Second John. We started a series last week on the often-forgotten Book of Second John. Second John and Third John are the two shortest books in the New Testament. Third John is the shortest, although it has 14 verses, and Second John has 13 verses. In terms of word count, Third John is the shortest book of all in the New Testament, 219 words in the Greek. Third John has 245. I think that most of us would agree, if we've gone to church any time at all, we don't normally hear sermons from Second John or from Third John, but both those books are important. And we're in the Book of Second John in a sermon series I've entitled Nothing But the Truth. The theme of the little book, the little postcard letter of Second John, is truth. And he repeats that theme in Third John. Second John uses the word truth 5 times in just 13 verses. Third John uses the word truth 6 times in 14 verses. So, truth is key. It's important to John. So, let's begin reading in verse 1.
"The elder..." That's how John refers to himself. "The elder to the chosen lady and her children..." We don't know if that is an individual person, or if that's an individual congregation, or if that's to the church at large. We're not sure about that, but it doesn't really make a difference, because the message is the same, whether it's to a lady and her children that had a house church there in her house, or whether it's to a local congregation, or whether it's the church at large. "The elder to the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in truth; and not only I, but also all who know the truth, for the sake of the truth which abides in us and will be with us forever.
