If you have your Bible, please turn to Second Timothy chapter 2. We're starting a new series today. It's the theme for our church this year. And the theme is Soldiers of the Cross.
Did you know that the moment that a person places his or her faith and trust in Jesus, and Jesus alone, for salvation, that person is born again, and that person is placed in the Lord's army?
Now, when our kids were little, we had videos that we would play them. And one of the videos that they listened to a lot had Bible songs, kids' Bible songs on it. And one of the songs - this was either in the house or in the car - but one of the songs was, The B-I-B-L-E, yes, that's the Book for me." And so, they learned that. And then they learned about the Lord's army. "I'm in the Lord's army, I'm in the Lord's army. I may never march in the infantry, ride in the calvary, shoot the artillery; I may never zoom (remember you did all those hand motions, and we did with our kids), zoom 'ore the enemy, but I'm in the Lord's army." You say, "Is that really true? Is that really biblical? Does the Bible really say that we're in the Lord's army? I mean, we have those songs, "Onward, Christian Soldiers." We have those songs, "Stand Up, stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross." But does the Bible really teach that?" Yes, it does. As a matter of fact, Paul would use that metaphor and that terminology. He called Epaphroditus, in the Book of Philippians, "...my fellow soldier in the ministry..." He called Archippus, in the Book of Philemon, "....my fellow soldier in the ministry..." And in Second Timothy chapter 2, he says to Timothy, his son in the faith, the last letter he ever penned, writing this from prison in Rome, he says to him, "You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, these entrust ...
