Ephesians 6:10-20
Everyone who knows anything about American history knows the date December 7, 1941. FDR said it's, "A date that will live in infamy." On that date so many years ago, before 8:00 in the morning, the Japanese came in during a surprise attack and bombed, shot and destroyed the ships and the people there at Pearl Harbor. Twenty-one ships were damaged or lost. Twenty-four hundred and three people lost their lives, and eleven hundred and forty-three people were wounded as a result of that surprise air raid. The date that will live in infamy. One of the things that we learned about Pearl Harbor was, we were defeated in that battle so soundly because we were not prepared for the attack. We weren't geared up. We weren't ready for the attack.
It has well been said that the Christian life is not a playground; it's a battleground. And as we've been sharing in this series, our theme for the year, We are soldiers of the Cross. As Paul told Timothy, "Suffer hardship with me as a good soldier of Christ Jesus." We want to be good soldiers of the cross. And a good soldier is disciplined, and a good soldier is courageous, and a good soldier is prepared for the battle. A good soldier puts on the full armor of God and is ready to do battle with the enemy. God wants us to be good soldiers. We are soldiers. As believers, we are soldiers, but the question is, are you a good soldier? Are you disciplined? Are you courageous? Are you prepared for the battle? Have you put on the full armor of God?
Now, Paul wrote the Book of Ephesians from his first Roman imprisonment. He was chained between two Roman guards, and he saw every day the dress of the Roman guards. He was very familiar, just as all the people in the first century, very familiar with the Roman soldier. They knew what the Roman soldiers wore.
