There are few things in the church... that are more intimidating... than the one-upper prayer circle. Has anyone ever experienced that before? Of course, you have. These are very common in churches today.

But just in case you're unfamiliar with the one-upper prayer circle... A one-upper prayer circle is where someone organizes a time of prayer and says... we're going to sit in a circle and then take turns praying...

...and then someone begins and prays first, and they pray a normal, simple, prayer... but when they say AMEN, it's like something happens... and, when it comes time for the second person to pray, they feel this enormous amount of pressure... to pray better, so what do they do? ...they add some bigger words... and some more impressive phrases... to make themselves sound more spiritual than the last person who prayed. And then the next person prays... and they feel the pressure to do the same, one-upping... the person who prayed before them.

Today, we are continuing in our series entitled, "Powerful Prayers" and we're going to be reading a prayer in [John chapter 17] that cannot be... one-upped.
And I say that because the prayer we're going to be unpacking today was prayed by none other than Jesus, himself... and nobody is going to one-up Jesus, AMEN!?!

As you're turning to [John 17] I want to set the stage so that you understand the timeline and the magnitude of what's happening here.

This was just moments before Jesus was betrayed by Judas... just moments before he was arrested and taken to the pit under Caiphas' house... this prayer was the precursor to Peter denying him in the courtyard... just prior to the crucifixion.

And yet, with Jesus knowing in that moment... what was happening and what was about to happen... [John 17:1] says, "Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so that the Son m ...
