A Love Story
Mike Stone
Mark 14:3-9
The story of Jesus is a story of immeasurable love. The world has never known love like the love expressed through Christ. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
For God demonstrated His love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. The Bible is full of verses that speak of the love our precious Lord has for us. But here in Mark 14, we have a love story of a different sort. It's not the story of Christ's love for a sinner. It's the story of a woman's love for Christ.
May I ask you, do you have a love for the Lord Jesus? It's obvious He has a love for you. But do you have a love for Him? Of course, if you love Him, it's because He first loved you. But does heaven know the story of your love for Jesus?
Here is a woman whose story is included in Matthew 26 and John 12. Don't confuse this woman with the sinful woman in Luke 7 who washed His feet with her tears and dried His feet with her hair. That's a different story. But it's a love story just the same.
And Jesus makes an incredible statement about this woman in verse 9. He says that everywhere the gospel is preached, her story will be told. That literally means that the story of this woman is forever linked to the story of Jesus and that you can't fully tell the story of one without the other. And it's a beautiful story of love.
Jesus loved her and she loved Him.
In verses 1-2 it is clear we have worked our way up to the middle of Holy Week. After establishing that fact, Mark goes back 4 days in time to record a story that happened before the Triumphal entry. He does so to "back up" and let readers know what final act caused the timing of Judas' betrayal.
We are now hours away from the kiss of betrayal and Mark pauses to tell us the story of a woman named Mary, who touched Jesus' feet and in doing so touched His heart. Jesus personally ...
