Hebrews 11:23-29
Open your bibles to Hebrews 11. Today, we're looking at Fearless Faith. You can either walk by faith or live in fear, but you can't do both. One always wins over the other. The apostle Paul wrote 2 Timothy 1:7: "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
'Spirit of fear' is the idea 'running scared'. When fear has control, we live nervous and hesitant. When faith is in control, we live confident & hopeful. Fear drags us down; faith lifts us up.
When I first got my driver's license, I drove a 1978 Buick Skylark that was about the length of a city block. It was like driving a tank. I'm sure that's why my parents gave it to me. I remember one day it wasn't acting right. It just wouldn't go like was supposed to. I couldn't figure it out. Finally, my dad took a look at it and said, "Bob, you've got the parking brake on." Fear is kind of like that; it puts the brakes on your life. It messes with everything. It muffles God's voice. It increases your anxiety. It decreases your hope. It clouds your judgment. It slows your obedience. And it poisons your peace.
That's why the Bible has so much to say about fear. One bible student counted 365 'fear nots' in Scripture. One for every day of the year. God knows we will square off with some form of fear every single day. It's not a battle you win once, and never deal with again. If you defeat it today, it will be back for another fight tomorrow.
That's why we are to continually live by faith. Faith is God's antidote to fear. Faith is believing what God has revealed, trusting what He has promised, and living accordingly. Faith acts like God is telling the truth. Fear does the opposite. Fear calls God a liar. Fear says God can't be trusted. Fear claims God is not in control. Fear convinces you God has changed His mind. Fear demands that you take matters into your ...
