Hebrews 11:8-16
Turn to Hebrews 11. Today, we're going to get to the nitty gritty of faith. When you get to the nitty gritty of something, you get to the core, the heart, the essentials of it. We're going to get to the core, the heart, the essentials of what it really means to live by faith. We're repeatedly told in Scripture that as gospel believers and Christ followers, we are to live by faith and not by sight. The only way to know God, the only way to please God is by faith. So what exactly does that mean to be a person who lives by faith?
The answer to that question is going to be taught to us by a couple of people who God put in His hall of fame of faith. They are a married couple named Abraham & Sarah. Look at Hebrews 11:8-16 (READ). Over the last couple weeks, we've been defining biblical faith like this:
- Biblical Faith BELIEVES what God has revealed and TRUSTS what God has promised, and then obediently lives it. Faith isn't just feeling like God is telling the truth. Nor is it just saying God is telling the truth. For faith to truly be faith, it involves acting or living like God is telling the truth. Obedience is the visible expression of invisible faith.
Maybe you've heard me tell the story of the first man to walk on a tightrope across Niagara Falls (pic). His name was Charles Blondin. He did it in 1860. A crowd of 25,000 cheering fans gathered to witness his amazing feat. For a few days, he went back and forth, traversing that tightrope in different ways. He walked across. Then he walked across on stilts. Then he rode a bicycle across. Then he scooted across it on a chair. One of his greatest feats was pushing a wheelbarrow across the tightrope filled with 300 pounds of weights. At one point, he yelled to the spectators, "How many of you believe I can push a man or woman in a wheelbarrow across the tightrope." Every hand went up. Then Blondin said ...
