Big Idea:
It's likely that things going well in our lives has little to do with us. God is writing a bigger story and invites us to be a part of it.
Intro:
Each year our church does an alignment study, which means that all of our groups use the questions from the Sunday morning message. This provides alignment on how we can grow together in purpose and on purpose as the church. As we grow on purpose, it will change our community. Imagine when we begin practicing collectively patience, faithfulness, and self-control and the impact that has in our homes, relationships, and at work.
So this year's study will focus on the two brothers who handled life differently and how God uses both of them for a greater purpose.
How do you respond when something happens outside of your control? Are you quick to break? This series we'll track trough the lives of Joseph and Judah. We'll learn from Moses' storytelling that Joseph had to learn how to bend before he felt like breaking. Each week we'll see how Joseph's story was part of a much bigger story-God saving a broken family from starvation and making them into a nation that would bring forth His Son to save many.
Connection/Tension:
It's been said, "Repeat a lie often enough it becomes the truth." This is credited to Nazi Joseph Goebbels, who understood how to effectively use propaganda to carry the Nazi message.
This is called the "illusion of truth" effect, which is believing false information or untruth after hearing it repeatedly.
Here's why this is effective. We hear thousands of messages (new information) each day. To investigate each message to determine if it's true would take a lot of effort and energy. So the shortcut is to compare it with what we already know.
Here are a few examples:
- "There were three wise men." The Bible doesn't specify how many...just that there were three gifts give ...
