Please take God's Word in your hands and turn to John 20:1-18 as we begin a new series we are entitling "Empty! This Changes Everything." Today, we're going to be talking about saying good-bye to sorrow. Last week we celebrated Easter which for many churches, is the climax of all the events on the church calendar. Yet, as a teaching team at our three campuses, we made the decision to focus on Scripture that often goes untouched after Easter. We feel it is important to look at how Easter changed the lives of the people closest to that first celebration of the resurrection.
In fact, that first Easter Sunday changed the world forever. A couple years ago, Time magazine celebrated their 80th anniversary. They dedicated an entire issue to the 80 most historic events in all of history, those events that changed history in the course of time. Stephen Kopp was given the job of writing an article that would highlight these 80 events. What a tall order that was, trying to put into words 80 things that changed the way we look at life and the world around us. I like how he starts the article: "While history usually takes decades and lifetimes to unfold, on certain days the world seems to spin faster on its axis. It is on these days that everything seems to change." I don't have time to give you all 80, but I want to highlight a few.
First, before we go to the things seen in the newspapers, we should recognize that good life changes happen to us personally every day, such as engagements, marriages, promotions at work. Maybe you had one of those this week, when something took place and everything will be changed in your life. I saw on Facebook this week that one of our own church members recently moved into their first home. What a life-changing event that is. I remember getting the keys to our home, beginning to move in, making a life there and ...
