Today we are concluding a series on the Ten Commandments. Our series is based on a verse in Deuteronomy 10:4: "The Lord wrote on tablets of stone ten words he received on the mountain." The first four commands emphasize our relationship with God, and the last six commands highlight our earthly relationships.

The tenth command says, "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor's." Have you ever noticed that nine of the commands begin with God stating, "Thou shalt not?" No one likes to be told, "Don't!"

The Children's Museum put a worthless item on display several years ago with a sign that read, "Do not touch." The museum reported that 79% of the people who read the sign touched the object! We all have a sin nature and occasionally, we struggle with greed. Greed scratches at the door of inner peace. Greed destroys our chances to experience contentment.

While we complain about the rising cost of living we still drive new cars, purchase the latest technology, pipe in satellite, cable, or streaming into our homes - and we eat out more often than is wise. Having said that, however, let's agree that coveting does not prevent us from enjoying the blessings of God. Paul reminded Timothy (1 Timothy 6:17) that, "God has given us all things to enjoy." But, to enjoy God's blessing, we need fewer possessions and more inner contentment

By the way, the tenth commandment is unique: it's the only command that deals with attitude. The first nine commands deal with specific behaviors, while the tenth goes straight for the heart. God says, "Do not covet." Do not crave for the things that your neighbor owns.
