Malachi 1:1-5
Last Words are important. They are the last things someone hear from us, possibly forever. When married couples leave for work the last words spoken are usually, "Bye. I love you." When you teenager is leaving the house to go out with friends the last words spoken are usually, "I love you. Be careful."
Last words are remembered. They are fresh. We want our last words to be the right words.
- Some of Paul's last words to Timothy were of instruction and encouragement. Preach the Word.
- Jesus knew the importance of last words. Before He returned to heaven, He reminded His followers of their mission...Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.
As we turn to Malachi, we will be reading last words, the very last words of the OT.
- Malachi, whose name means, "My messenger," and apt name for a prophet of God, will be the last prophetic voice the nation of Israel will hear for the next 400 years.
- Malachi will be the last prophetic voice they hear until the voice of a camel-skin wearing, locust eating prophet, named John the Baptist, appears on the pages of the NT.
400 years of silence from God. That is a very, very, long time. To give you some idea of how long, the founding of Jamestown, Va. In 1607, the first American colony, to today encompasses 416 years. In some ways, you can say the history of our nation, from the first colony to where we are as 50 states, all that history, could fit inside those silent years for Israel. Those years between Malachi and what we read about in the Gospels.
The OT's closing salvo, offered by Malachi, would have most likely occurred during the time of Nehemiah. Quick history review...
-Because of sin they were taken into captivity.
- A group under the leadership of Zerubbabel would return and rebuild the Temple. (Ezra, Haggai and Zechariah).
- Nehemiah would bring another group back to rebuild the walls and bring order to their existence.
