We live in a world of lies! Politicians lie to get our votes, advertisers lie to separate us from our cash, and lawyers twist the truth to confuse juries.

When Sports Illustrated wrote their 2005 Year in Sports issue, they included a picture of four baseball players. The cover read, "The Liars Club." The picture on their cover included Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Jose Canseco and Rafael Palmeiro. All four of those players testified under oath, before Congress - and all four of those players lied through their teeth.

We're in a series called 10 Words and it's based on Deuteronomy 10:4, "The Lord wrote on the tablets ten words he received on the mountain." God's commandments were stated in single words: a verb in the imperative form, preceded by a negative prefix of one syllable. The ninth commandment reads, "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor." The mono syllabic version says, "No Fibbing."

This commandment against lying is based on one of the most fundamental principles of all: the sanctity of truth. Pilate once asked Jesus, "What is truth?" Everybody assumed his question had a legitimate answer.

But we have been forced to change Pilate's question. Instead of, "What is truth?" we ask, "Is there any truth?" Are there any absolutes? Is anyone ever honest with their words?

The Bible challenges us to be people of integrity; to tell the truth all the time. Our tendency, after hearing about murder, adultery, and stealing is to let our guard down and relax. In comparison murder, lying doesn't sound so bad. Everybody fudges just a little bit, right?

We know that lying is basically wrong, but sometimes you have to tell a fib to keep from hurting someone's feelings. Euphemisms fall from our lips instead of the truth. We're not untruthful; we tell "white lies." We fib, stretch the truth, and embellish the facts.
