OPENING ILLUSTRATION: March 31, 1999 the cinematic world experienced a seismic shift with the opening of, "The Matrix" starring Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne. The movie's descriptor as a Science Fiction Action Film really didn't do it justice. I would describe it as a Philosophical Thriller.
Months before filming began, the actors were told not only to train in martial arts for the ground breaking fight scenes, but they were also instructed to do a deep dive into philosophy.
The key scene in the movie is when Laurence Fishborne's character, "Morpheus" explains to Keanu Reeve's character, "Neo" that his entire life has been experienced in a computer generated alternate reality - the Matrix, designed to keep him asleep while the machine uses him like a battery.
Morpheus offers Neo a blue pill and a red pill.
- The BLUE pill will return Neo to the world he is familiar with to live out the rest of his days oblivious to the influence of the Matrix.
- The RED pill will enable Neo to step out of the Matrix and join a team of rebels seeking to set humanity free from the machine's chilling influence.
There is a reason that movie resonated so deeply, especially with young men like myself. At some point we realize that the game of life seems somewhat rigged. We recognize an undertow.
ILLUSTRATION: You know what an undertow is. You walk down to play in the ocean directly in front of your beach chairs… you play for 45 mins and recognize that something has moved you yards down the beach.
Well, there is a cultural undertow that is remarkably powerful and almost imperceptible.
It tells you what to desire in life, it tells you how to think, it tells you what to feel, it gives you things to be outraged about. And look around you, you aren't the only one caught up in the undertow.. millions of others are just as caught up as you are.
