Football season, both professional & college, is winding down. I know most everyone is excited about the big game tomorrow. "Go Dawgs!"

But the best part about football winding down is that baseball will soon be heating up. Spring training is just around the corner and for the past couple of months I have been following baseball's Hot Stove, the offseason free-agent signing period and team to team trades that take place.

As a Braves fan, I have not been thrilled to see our rivals the NY Mets spend money like crazy and add several big-name players. Makes me nervous.

Now those who know baseball history even a little know the NY Mets franchise began its part of baseball lore in a rather hapless and humiliating fashion. Put simply, they lost a lot. They were horrible.

During one bad stretch the Met's manager, Casey Stengel, got a cake for his birthday. Someone asked why his first baseman had not been given a cake on his birthday. Stengel replied, "we were afraid he might drop it!"

All of us know what it's like to drop the ball in the game of life. We know what it's like to drop the ball spiritually and endure a spiritual slump.
A season where we find ourselves further from God than we should be because
- We are living in disobedience and open rebellion
- Or we find ourselves loving Jesus less and other things more.

That had been the story of Jacob's life for much of the last decade. He had not abandoned the Lord or lived in hard-hearted shake your fist in the face of God or run the other way rebellion.

He was however not following as God as closely or passionately as he should have been. His pursuit of God had cooled. I dare say all of us know what that is like.
