Ecclesiastes 5:8-6:12
Let's turn our attention to God's Word again. We're near the end of Ecclesiastes 5 and will be covering all of chapter six. We're looking at this book to find the answer to a simple question: where do I find the good life?
Solomon, king of Israel, calls himself the preacher, the pundit or the professor. He's speaking to all who will listen, seeking to tell us where the good life can be found. In order to do this, he sees the world as his laboratory and his own life as his experiment. He's now an old man, near the end of his life and he sees his life as a cautionary tale to tell us where the good life cannot be found. From the get-go, Solomon has told us the good life cannot be found in pleasure, prestige, power or possessions. It can't be found in the parties of life. While all those things have their place and their times, he tells us repeatedly that our ultimate satisfaction and fulfillment in this world has to be found in something more than that which is "under the sun," that is, the things of this world.
For a large part of his life, Solomon believed he could find satisfaction and fulfillment in these things, but now he realizes he was wrong and that living life apart from God is utterly meaningless. Whether we pursue pleasure, possessions, prestige, power or the parties of life, all of these must bring God into the equation. Until we do, Solomon says life will be nothing more than chasing after the wind.
We as Christ followers know Jesus told us specifically that He came into the world to give us abundant life (John 10:10). His promise is what Solomon foretold, which is that a good life can be found in Him. The problem is we're still living "under the sun" and life here on earth brings a lot of temptations. We are tempted to live apart from God.
So let's look at how Solomon focuses on how we spend our money in ways that are separate from God's ways. We'll look at why we do this and ...
