What Legacy Am I Going to Leave?
What Say You?
James Merritt
II Timothy 4:6-8
Introduction
1. When Teresa and I had our first child medical technology was not what it is today. You had to wait until the child was born to determine whether it was a boy or a girl. From the time that Teresa got pregnant I wanted a son. That was also back in the day when the father was not allowed to be with the mother during birth. I remember like it was yesterday sitting on pins and needles in that waiting room. When the nurse walked through the door and said three words I wanted to hear as bad as anything I've ever heard in my life, "It's a boy!"
2. As you go through life you will find yourself wanting to hear certain words that can be life-changing. You want to hear a certain college say, "You've been accepted." You want to hear the love of your life say, "I do." You want to hear the doctor say, "It's benign." You want to hear the judge say, "Not guilty." You want to hear the IRS say, "We owe you." There are six words I want to hear after I am dead and I just need to hear them one time. It will be the most important time of my life after I leave this world. It is when I stand before the Lord and hear just these six words: "Well done good and faithful servant."
3. We are in a series that we have called "What Say You?" There are many things in life we don't get to decide. We don't get to decide when we were born, where we were born or who we were born to. We don't get to decide how tall we are going to be, the color of our eyes, the makeup of our DNA. We don't get to decide whether or not we die. We may choose when we die, how we die, and where we die if we are suicidal, but we don't get to decide whether or not to die.
4. We do get to answer the three most important questions about our past, our present and our future. We do get to make the three most important decisions, exercise the three most important choices, and what say you to those questions, decisions, ...
