True Forgiveness
Stephen Whitney
Matthew 11:28-30
One night Martin Luther went to sleep troubled about his sin. In a dream he saw an angel standing by a blackboard and at the top of the board was his name. The angel with chalk in hand, was listing all of his sins and the list filled the backboard. Luther shuddered in despair, feeling his sins were so many he could never be forgiven.
But suddenly in his dream he saw a hand that had been pierced write above the list of all his sins the words from I John 1:7
"The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin. "
As he gazed in amazement, the blood flowed from the wounded hand down the blackboard and washed the record clean.

These verses are often interpreted to mean that we can find "rest" in Christ from all the anxieties or stress of life. But that is not what Jesus is saying here. Instead, he is saying that the "rest" he offers is from trying to earn God's favor by keeping the OT law.
The OT law had 613 commandments, so it was impossible for someone to perfectly keep all of them throughout their whole life.
We cannot even keep the 10 commandments given in Exodus 20.
John Stott - "The law became a burden to those who tried to keep it in order to win salvation by their obedience. "
CONTEXT :27b
Salvation is the sovereign work of God where he chooses us.
Chooses (KJB will) - Gk. to deliberately or purposely do.
Mark 15:15 Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas . . . and Jesus . . . he delivered to be crucified.
Pilate deliberately did what the crowd wanted him to do.
Jesus determines he will reveal the Father to certain individuals.
M. Henry - "The Father has delivered into Jesus hands all power, authority, and judgment. We are indebted to him for all the revelation we have of God the Father's will and love. "
