Luke 4

1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

This event immediately followed the baptism and public unveiling of Jesus Christ. We also know that this encounter between Jesus and satan was no “chance” encounter, but clearly it was of the will of God. The text is absolutely clear that it was the Spirit of God who led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

First, Jesus was filled and led up of, or led up by the Spirit (Luke 4:1). Mark states (Mark 1:12) “And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness.” This is a great truth and worthy of some examination and application. The very fact that Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit is itself an astonishing truth. It shows the absolute need that as a human being, Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit. Since that was true of God, the Son, how much the more should it be true of every single professing Christian throughout redemptive history? If it was true for God, the Son, then how much the more for His children? If the greater (Christ) was filled and led by the Holy Spirit, how much more the lesser, being His children?

The passive voice represents the subject as being the recipient of the action. This means that Jesus received the leading; He did not perform the leading. That would be the active voice. In Mark’s account, it was the Holy Spirit who drove Jesus into the wilderness. Grammatically speaking, it was the Holy Spirit performed that action.

So when one looked at Jesus’ life one sees an entire life filled and led by the Holy Spirit. So then, if one wants to know how to live a life that ...
