1 And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,

This is a wonderful verse. We already know that there was plenty of healings going on, and don’t get me wrong; all of that was wonderful and glorifying to God. But I also love the fact that there were a number of people who were with Jesus to hear Him preach and teach the word of God. Clearly, those days have passed in our age and we do not want to hear the word of God. The text states that they pressed upon Him to hear the word of God. This means that the people rested upon what the Lord taught them. They were there willingly to be taught and understood the urgency in hearing the word of God.

2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.

The crowds were so large that Jesus had to get into a small boat and have the boat cast out a little to accommodate the crowds to teach them.

4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.

After Jesus finished teaching the crowds, He told Simon to put his nets in the deep part of the water and he would get a draught or haul of fish.

5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.

Peter knew how to fish; fishing was his profession. This verse may imply that his response to Jesus was suggesting that Jesus was a great teacher, but what did He know about fishing?
