1 And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.

The Lord and His disciples were going through the fields of corn on the Sabbath day. The word corn does not refer to maize, as we know it in America, but it refers to the grain of wheat or barley. Jesus and His disciples gathered the wheat or barley as they walked through the fields and rubbed it in their hands to shell it to satisfy their appetite. According the Pharisees, not Scripture, this would be considered a work and therefore unlawful. This was one of the “Sabbath challenges” that Jesus and His disciples faced from the religionist of His day. The Jewish leaders were more concerned for the keeping of days, weeks, months and years, but omitted the weightier matters of the law, such as righteousness, mercy and true holiness.

2 And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?

This statement, “certain of the Pharisees”, is used three times in the New Testament and I am of the opinion that these men were primarily following Jesus everywhere He went. In fact, when we studied Mark 12, we saw that these certain of the Pharisees were spies, who, along with the Herodians, were sent to trap Jesus in His words. These men did nothing but follow Jesus for the express purpose of trying to find fault in Him to discredit Him and His work before the people and His disciples. When they saw what was going on they said to HIM. You see, their attacks were leveled at Christ, most of all. Whether the religionist tried to discredit Jesus through questioning what He was doing through the disciples, or questioning what the disciples were doing, it all was to discredit Jesus.
