Luke 7:1-50
1 Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.
The end of Matthew 7 revealed that when Jesus had finished his sayings that all of the people were astonished because He taught as one having inherent authority and not as the scribed, who quoted from others. Let’s be reminded again that the people have never heard anything like this before. This was more than something new; more than just having a new teaching among all the teachers of like character. His teaching was completely and forever distinct from all of the teachers in His day because all He taught them was divine and from above. No earthly teacher at that time could make that claim and none were doing it; they were busy quoting from each other and from others. The masses, we have already seen, were familiar to a certain type of teacher; but when Jesus came on the scene He taught with the power of God. His teaching, His doctrine, slapped their minds out. They were in panic, in shock, in amazement. The people were shocked at His doctrine because he taught them as one who possessed His own authority or exousia. Jesus’ teachings were powerful because inherently He is God, the Son. He spoke with eternal and absolute power. The nature and content of His teaching and of His of demanding that the listeners do more than follow His teaching intellectually; but that they commit themselves to following His teaching by DOING it, or else the consequence of disobedience would be great and eternal. This was never heard of among the entire nation. He made the issue of going to Heaven and being a true child of God a matter of how they treated HIM and His teaching – nothing else. This was astonishing to the listeners. It called for them to make an immediate change of life; to give up all to truly follow Him. It means the end of self and selfish desires. It meant the end of living for thi ...
