Luke 11
1 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
Examine the way Jesus prayed.
• First of all, He prayed and He prayed continually. It was His manner to pray.
• Second, He prayed in a certain place. The word place, could mean, a portion or space marked off, as it were from a surrounding space. He prayed in a place that was alone from the crowd. His prayer was undisturbed because He knew the importance of praying to His Father.
This time, His disciples observed Him praying, they didn't disturb Him in His praying, they observed Him in His praying. After Jesus finished praying, one unnamed disciple came to Him and said Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
It was the custom of the outstanding Rabbis of that time to compose and to teach prayer formulas to their disciples. John the Baptizer did it to his disciples and now Jesus disciples wanted to be taught by Him to pray. This shows me something about the life of Jesus. That is, the disciples wanted to be like Him. They observed His spotless life; they observed His relationship to His Father and wanted that closeness that He had with His Father.
It also implies rather strongly that as disciples, they did not know HOW to pray. You see no prayer from the disciples up unto this point. This does not mean that they did not pray. It means that they wanted to know HOW to pray.
Many people pray without the foggiest notion that they are not praying correctly. There are many prayers that have been handed down through the generations; one family to another; prayers that are reflective of someone else’s heart, but not genuine praying from the individual doing the praying at that time.
