The first 14 verses of this chapter contains some of the most important language and instruction regarding prayer in the Bible. One of the greatest lessons about prayer that we will learn is that although we ought to always pray and not to quit, the fact also remains that all prayer is not acceptable prayer before God, and we will see that in this chapter. There are really two scenarios in these 14 verses, divided in the following divisions;
1. Verses 1-8
2. Verses 9-14 – There is also another important lesson in these verses also other than prayer, as we will see.
1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;
The question that arises from this verse alone is, first, what is prayer and second, what is the time that we ought to be praying? Prayer, fundamentally it is communication with God our needs and desires so that we might be more fully conformed to his ultimate will and purpose. Now we studied at length the Disciples prayer and many other prayers in Scripture. But the issue here is not so much in the form as it is in the persistence in prayer. Since prayer’s outcome is that we might be more fully conformed to his ultimate will and purpose, then we should always pray according to the will of God, according to 1 John 5,
1 John 5:13-15
13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
We should always pray according to the will of God, because we know at that time that He will hear us and respond to us by granting the petitions we desire of Him. Notice that prayer ...
