1 And it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders,
Once again, and I am going to continue to say this until it sinks into the minds and hearts of the listeners, that Jesus was a preacher of the gospel and a teacher. I have been emphasizing this truth since the beginning of this study and it is clear for those who want to see it that Jesus was a teacher and proclaimer of the gospel of God. We see that He “taught” and “preached” in the temple.
Jesus was one who systematically instructed the people. He also proclaimed the good tidings of good news of the gospel of God. There was no hooping, no style points, no glamour and no showmanship. He simply taught and preached to the people. So Jesus was continually teaching and preaching the people, which was one of the great aspects of His ministry, sad to say, that is often overlooked in the pattern He demonstrated.
As consistent as Jesus was a teacher and a preacher to the people, Sanhedrin delegation was as consistent to try to interfere with His ministry. Once again we see the absolute rudeness of the religious elite who blurted out questions as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple. Always keep in mind the absolute hatred of these men towards Jesus and it should not surprise you when you see this kind of behavior towards Him. So the religious big guns come into the temple where Jesus was and of course they began their interrogation. It first began with intimidation. The text states that they “came upon Him with the elders”. The intent was to scare Him or to catch Him off His guard. They all came in the temple and rushed upon Him immediately and at once. That was the first portion of their interrogation.
