1 And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.

Bochim was near Gilgal or Bethel. Remember, Gilgal was the place where all Israel made a dedication of themselves to the Lord on their entrance into the land. An angel of the Lord came and made a solemn and shattering proclamation. The Angel here is probably none other than the Angel of the Lord, who is seen in other OT books. Notice what this angel said. I made you go up out of Egypt and brought you into the land which I sware to give to your fathers. I gave your fathers a covenant that will never be broken. Sounds like this Angel is God Himself.

2 And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?

They were clearly instructed not to make any leagues with the inhabitants of the land; rather, they were to exterminate them and to destroy all of their false religion, but they simply refused to do it. The Angel asked, “Why?” Why did you not obey my commands? The thought was; “what did you hope to accomplish by doing that?”

3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be [as thorns] in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.

54 And ye shall divide the land by lot for an inheritance among your families: and to the more ye shall give the more inheritance, and to the fewer ye shall give the less inheritance: every man's inheritance shall be in the place where his lot falleth; according to the tribes of your fathers ye shall inherit.
