Judges Chapter 5 (5 of 21)
Series: Judges

Judges 5
1 Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day, saying,
2 Praise ye the LORD for the avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves.
The Hebrew word for offered, speaks of one who offers up a freewill offering. A freewill offering was used as a dedication to the Lord of one's life to service. As long as Israel followed the Lord, He would bless them and deliver the enemies into their hand. It's that simple.
3 Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, [even] I, will sing unto the LORD; I will sing [praise] to the LORD God of Israel.
This is a tremendous song of praise to the Lord. It is a song to the nations around them, addressed to the kings and the princes. It is a song of God's tremendous power. This is what we as believers should be praising Him for and yet, so many of us experience so little of His power because we have not fully devoted ourselves to Him. Songs should be directed to HIM for His goodness and HIS mighty power, not to the glory of the singer or group.
4 LORD, when thou wentest out of Seir, when thou marchedst out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, and the heavens dropped, the clouds also dropped water.
5 The mountains melted from before the LORD, [even] that Sinai from before the LORD God of Israel.
This incident refers to events described in Deuteronomy 33:1-2; Psalm 68:7-9 and Psalm 97:1-6. These verses all confirm the greatness and the power of our awesome God. This is what Deborah and Barak sang; and women all over should follow her example and sing in great joy for the power of God instead of foolishly trying to use her as some sort of standard bearer for some woman's lib movement in the church, trying to usurp both man and God.
6 In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were unoccupied, and the travellers walked through byways.
