The Reason for Christmas
Jerry Watts
Luke 1:26-38
(TEXT) We live in a culture that loves to ask, ‘‘WHY.’’ I understand that the ‘‘WHY’’ question can be annoying. How many remember these days with young children? (WHY vid) Had enough? Like it or not, we live in a bottom-line world that asks the ‘‘Why’’ question all the time. Our little ones are masters at it, but all of Boomers, Busters, Generation Xers, and others all want to know the why?
Today’s message is entitled, ‘‘The Reason for (the Why) of Christmas’’. Some of us simpletons will offer, ‘‘It’s the birthday of Jesus’’ so let’s move along. It is Jesus’ birthday but consider this truth; ‘‘God didn’t have to do it like He did. So why did He do it this way? What was the reason?’’ Knowing the answers to questions is valid.

Now, that was a simpler time, for which many today long, but let me offer 2 things: 1) It’s not going back, and 2) it wasn’t particularly healthy. ‘‘Because I said so’’ is like building a house on shifting sand. Knowing the ‘why’ or the ‘reason’ (the facts or the truth) gives us a foundation upon which to build our lives.
Why unhealthy? Observation. In the last 20 years we’ve had a mass exodus from the church and, more to the point from RELIGION. If we only give our legacy the religion of ‘because I said so’, they may well become one of the millions who abandon God and His church in the coming years. When we only connect to a church or religion, without deeper reason, falling away becomes not only possible but probable.
Before we unpack this Christmas message, let me offer some reasoning for the importance of this message of Christmas. Did you realize that the fastest growing belief system in the USA since around 2003 are called the ‘‘NONES.’’ These are the people who believe nothing. Here’s the sad truth: Millions of them were raised inside the church. 16 Million as Catholics. 7.5 Mi ...
