Outline of Chapter Three:

1 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,
2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.

One should ask the obvious question; who are the “them” in verse one Paul referred to? I thought initially that it referred to the servants in chapter 2 verses 9 and 10. But I believe that it more than likely referred to the individual church body as a whole. Remember, there were a number of churches in Crete that Titus was to set in order, so the instruction was to the churches. The Cretian believers were to be reminded constantly to do exactly the opposite of what they were used to doing to authority before their conversion. They were use to rebelling against it. Always remember what was said about the Cretians in chapter one and two and let the truth shape the interpretation. As professing believers the Cretians were no longer to be rebellious towards authority, but subject meaning, to subject oneself or to obey; and they were to do this to principalities and powers meaning, to obey the Roman emperors, or the supreme civil powers in any place. By powers, we are to understand the deputies of the emperors, such as proconsuls, etc., and all such as are in authority - under the supreme powers wherever we dwell.
