1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

All things God created were completed and in the seventh day His works were finished. That's what it means when it says, God rested. He wasn’t tired; He just finished the work of creation. There is no other physical creation from this time on.

3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

God set this day apart because His work was completed. Later, this day was to be set apart in the life of Israel to remember the creation of God. It was a time set apart from regular activities to devote oneself to the worship of God. I already said to you in our study in Psalms that I still could remember when I was a child growing up in New York no stores were open on a Sunday. In fact, it was against the law to have a store open on a Sunday. There was a time in this country when God was respected. Now, no stores are closed on a Sunday. God is ignored as the masses of men and women greedily worship the dollar while ignoring God.

4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,
5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.

This is the history or the account of the Heavens and the Earth when they were created. The time in which, the Lord made the Earth and the Heavens, would be the better translation.
