Genesis 5

And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.

The forth chapter of Genesis closes on a most important point in scripture; "then began men to call upon the name of the LORD." Apparently it was not common for man to do so until Enos was born. This truth will be seen as we see what some of the names of these men were in chapter 5. Sin was so great in the years after Adam and Eve's rebellion that mankind began to cry out to God. Sin in any society should cause men to do that. Our society should be doing this but instead it tries in vain to blot out the need for God as well as the existence of God. One thing about sin, which folks seem to forget, it does increase and one day the people of the entire world will cry out to God. Some will cry out to be saved, others will cry for the mountains and rocks to fall upon them. Yet others will blaspheme Him, even though they know that judgments are coming from God. Though men today rest in their smugness and wickedness, the day is indeed coming when men will be calling upon the name of the Lord. I'm afraid that very little of that is going on today, in my estimation. It also seems that the lineage of Cain were content to call upon the earth and their physical existence, God having dispelled Cain from His presence as a judgment, while Enos, through Seth, called upon the Lord.

Another interesting note about this list in chapter 5; though sons and daughters are mentioned, there is not one single daughter named in this genealogy, only sons.

Lets see just a few of the names and their meanings and see if they are not indicators that some men began to call on the name of the Lord.
