1 Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
The scene now shifts to Sarai, Abram’s wife. She was barren but she had an idea to solve the problem of having a child. I like to think that she’s trying to speed up the plan of God. Besides, she’s not getting any younger! If Abram is going to have a child from his own loins it could just as easily come from her handmaid than her. Notice where her handmaid came from—Egypt! You can remove the principals from Egypt but you can’t remove Egypt from the principals. They left Egypt; rather, were ejected from there, but they didn’t leave it all behind. Here is Sarai’s slave, a handmaid, named Hagar.
2 And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
Hopefully we will learn some valuable lessons here from the voice of Sarai that I believe will be helpful in watching what I would like to call, “The analogy of doing the wrong thing in the wrong way and the wrong time and for the wrong reason.” Or, “How I tried to help out God rather than obey Him”.
1. She spoke to Abram. And Sarai said unto Abram. Whatever her plan was she spoke it to Abram. It will be proven later that it would have been better if she said never opened her mouth with this idea. Why? Because Abram already knew the plan of God and he didn’t need Sarai’s advice or suggestions, which obviously were not a part of God’s design.
2. She said, “Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing” or better, look at me right now, I’m barren; the Lord restrained me from bearing children. This she said to reinforce the coming idea she had for Abram. This leads to another point; Sarai only focused on her present circumstances, not God’s promise of abili ...
