1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
From chapter 16:16 until the first verse of this chapter, we see that 13 years have passed and Abram is 99 years old. The Lord appears to Abram and said that He is the Almighty God, El Shaddai, meaning the ROCK. God is very capable of performing His will IN HIS TIME. Notice that all of the names of God speak of strength and of His infinite ability to perform His will. The names of God SHOULD bring comfort to a troubled and impatient heart.
God commanded Abram to, “walk before Him and you be perfect”. Knowing the character of God and who He is is the best motivator to follow God with complete confidence. Whenever God revealed Himself to mankind in any age, He never revealed Himself as an equal or weaker than His creation, but infinitely superior to man and to all creation, which He made.
Many have tried to reduce God to the level of man and they attempt to do it in many ways. But religiously speaking many will assume that God is not mighty enough or powerful enough or faithful enough to keep His word about anything. That the character of God, of ho He is, is so insignificant that it does not demand a walk of trust and obedience on the part of the professing worshipper of God.
But such was not the case here with Abram, God told Him to “walk before Him and you be perfect”. That is, to go forth in His presence and be blameless.
Do you understand that to mean that God was making a suggestion here to Abram? Many by the way they live seem to be under the impression that when God commands someone to o a certain thing that He somehow means something else or that His commands and not really commands, but that they do not carry the same weight as a command.
