This is indeed one of the most talked about chapters in the scriptures, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. It also includes the final chapter of Lot in the Old Testament. He leaves the scene of scripture in a sordid way. We will indeed learn many lessons here.
1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;
The two angels that left Abraham now enter into the city of Sodom, the gates being the place of public life and activity. An important note here: Lot is sitting at the gate. This means that he is a judge in the city of Sodom. When we first saw Lot when he left Abraham, he pitched his tent towards Sodom. Now we find here that he pitched himself in Sodom. He has become a judge in the city. He greets the two angels in the customary sign of respect.
2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.
3 And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.
Lot first pleads with the two visitors to stay at his house all night, when the angels want to stay in the street all night, then Lot urges with an unbending insistence that they stay in his house and not in the street. Lot is well aware of the fact of the ungodly behavior of the Sodomites. This is what Peter said of Lot in 2nd Peter 2:6-8 (read). Lot's soul was vexed, troubled, daily at the ungodly behavior of the Sodomites, as should all those who are righteous. Then Lot makes a feast for them and they all ate. So far, so good.
