1 And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar.

Abraham heads south from Mamre towards the Negev and stays in Gerar. Gerar was a Philistine city and ironically, both Abraham now, and his son Isaac, will follow the same pattern of faithlessness in this city.

2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.

Does this sound familiar to you? Didn’t we see this in chapter 12 of Genesis? (Read 12:11-20) Did Abraham forget the lesson and all the trouble that was experienced when he committed this act of faithlessness in Egypt? After all of what God has revealed to him, after all of God’s protection and leading of Abraham’s life, why in the world would he go back to lying again to try to protect himself and to reject the protection of God in his life? But this is common practice of many professing believers today. God has blessed us to no end, He has protected us, we have seen His hand in our lives so clearly that we know that it is indeed the hand of God and in spite of all of that, we will still reject God and revert to trying to accomplish our own wants and desires through our own understanding and solutions. One of the reasons why I know that it is absolutely essential for all of us to go through the bible is that we not only see the character of our great God, but also we are given so many wonderful examples of men and women who walked with God, their highs and lows, their victories and defeats, their trust and their doubts. All of that given by God to show us how to walk with God in our own lives. Abraham’s lie this time has the same effect with Abimelech like it did with the Pharaoh, he took Sarah for his harem. Sarah was 90 years old and still quite an attractive woman.
