1 Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah.
2 And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah.
3 And Jokshan begat Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leummim.
4 And the sons of Midian; Ephah, and Epher, and Hanoch, and Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.

Someone will always ask, “What is the significance of the genealogies?” The significance is that we will run paths with some of these in later portions of scripture. For example, the name Midian, where the Midianites come from Moses will eventually take a wife from there.

The Midianites are also involved in the sale of Joseph in Genesis chapter 37. Dedan is also involved with scripture later in 1st Kings and in Ezekiel’s time as well. Sheba had a queen that visited Solomon in 1st Kings chapter 10.

These are just a few examples of why it is essential to go through the entire Bible.

There were two people who really inspired me to go through the entire Bible as a pastor. The first person was J. Vernon McGee. A long time ago we had lunch in Pasadena and I asked him this question: “what is the first thing that you would tell a preacher starting in the ministry?” He looked me straight in the eyes and said, “young man, preach the word of God, that’s what I would tell any man in the ministry”.

But the second person who had the greatest influence on me preaching the entire Bible was the apostle Paul. There could be no greater man who had such a grasp of the Old Testament and we see through his epistles how that grasp was needed to understand anything about the new covenant. Many people disdain the Old Testament as just Jewish history. That, my friends, is sheer foolishness.
