This chapter continues where chapter 27 left off. Now that Rebekah and Jacob successfully finished their deception and lies to get the blessing and birthright from Isaac, Jacob is now instructed to go to the household of Laban to get a wife.
This leaving was also a deception from Rebekah, who, under the guise of concern that Jacob would marry a non-worshipper of God, like Esau did twice, would bring further grief to her heart. She had planned to send Jacob away for a short time and when Esau’s hatred and temper cooled, then she would send for him to come back home, which would not happen in her lifetime.
The price that people will pay for deception and sin is great and in spite of suffering after suffering, example after example, people will still believe the lie that somehow or another God will bless my sinful behavior. I am ready to say that you are a fool if you believe that. You are a fool if you mock at sin. If you make light of sin, the scriptures call you a fool.
1 And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.
2 Arise, go to Padan-aram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother’s father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother’s brother.
3 And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people;
4 And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.
5 And Isaac sent away Jacob: and he went to Padan-aram unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother.
Isaac pronounces the blessing of Abraham upon Jacob and a warning not to take a daughter from the Canaanites upon Jacob. We have seen about this man Laban already that he was not one to b ...
