Genesis 35
1 And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother.
The first 15 verses record the return of Jacob to Bethel. Bethel was the place where God met with Jacob and God promised Jacob that He would be with him and bless him, and that He would keep him wherever he would go. Jacob fled from Esau, many years before they met again in chapter 34, and it seems to me that he was still running after they met in chapter 34. Instead of meeting his brother as promised when Esau went to Seir, we have no indication that he ever did go back to spend time with Esau. In fact, we saw Jacob going in the opposite direction, buying land among the heathens and paying the price for it too! Jacob is now going back to Bethel, the place where God confirmed the Abrahamic covenant to him. Bethel was the place where Jacob built an altar to God and he promised God that he would give Him a tenth of all that he had, if God would indeed be with him. Another concern of Jacob was that when the surrounding cities heard what had happened with the slaughter of Shechem and Hamor that they would come and destroy him. Of course God would not allow that to happen because He had a covenant to keep and we will see shortly that God protected Jacob.
2 Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments:
3 And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.
4 And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.
