1 And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.

The scene switches back from the unchosen line of Esau to the chosen line of Jacob. In this verse we see that Jacob is living in the land, which was promised by God to him and to his father and his grandfather—the land of Canaan.

2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.

The scene also switches primarily to one son, Joseph. He was 17 at this The verse states that he brought a bad report back to Jacob concerning his brothers who were born of the concubines. Nothing is mentioned of Benjamin who was also born of Rachel. The news Joseph brought back to Jacob was bad news concerning something the brothers did or said or both.

3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colors.

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children. Here’s where the problem lied. It was with Jacob’s favoritism with Joseph. This is why it is so important to study the whole Bible. Those of us who followed this study of Genesis have already seen the fruits of this attitude of Jacob’s favoritism long before we got into this chapter.

Remember when we looked at Leah’s foolish attempt to win her husband’s love by having children? Did it work? It most certainty didn’t, and in spite of that, women to this day attempt the same foolish act, which never brings love from any man.

Remember how the scriptures said that Jacob hated Leah? Time and children never changed Jacob’s heart for Leah. Nor was any love given to the sons of Leah either as we have seen or will continue to see.
