Hebrews 11
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Undoubtedly, the 11th chapter of Hebrews is one of the greatest chapters of the Bible and unfortunately one of the greatest misquoted chapters of the Bible as well. The fact is with this chapter, as with other great chapters that are often misquoted, this chapter does not stand alone in its interpretation. The context of the previous chapters are absolutely essential in the proper understanding of this chapter. For example, some in the word faith cult, who have tried to find passages to justify their false doctrine on faith, misuse this passage as one of their evidences that they can just believe and receive from God. That faith is some abstract guarantee that whatever you hope for and believe in what you don't see, that this is the formula for answered prayer. They say, for example, “You see what kind of faith it takes to get a blessing from God? The Bible said it's a now faith, a right now faith.” This is just an example of how far the biblically ignorant will go to find support for their foolishness. • The context of the passage is NOT the acquisition of materialism.
• To say that the kind of faith described by the writer is a "now faith" is grammatically impossible both in English and Greek.
Now the sad truth is this, there are people who are equally willing dupes who believe such nonsense and in the process miss the greater truth that the writer of the epistle is teaching. The great truth of Hebrews 11 is the fact th ...
