Hebrews 13
1 Let brotherly love continue.
Remain in the love which Christians cherish for each other as brethren. This is a great command to the believers, who were under extreme persecution. The believers were commanded to love each other; for it would be this love that would bind together the genuine saints, who were under tribulation. We studied this already in chapter 6:10-11. It was a love that was to be demonstrated and continued. We studied this already in chapter 10:24-25.
As I stated when we studied these verses,
“The believer ALWAYS has on his or her mind the needs of other believers FIRST, before his or her own needs. This is the fruit of God's love. That concern is always seen as that which is reciprocated among believers. Nowhere in scripture is the attitude of independence from one another or selfishness ever commanded of believers. The fact is, these are called sin in the Bible. Rather than independence, there is an interdependence on each other. Rather than selfishness, there is selflessness that is to be demonstrated among believers. We have already seen that believers are to be in harmony with the same thoughts and the same mind. If thinking or behavior that is ungodly or unchristlike or unproductive towards church growth is coming inside the church, then these things must be corrected, not tolerated.”
The believing family is responsible for maintaining the environment of love towards each other. This means that it is commanded to ALL of us individually by God; and that we are individually responsible to do whatever it takes to carry out this imperative. This truth can be summarized by Paul's word of encouragement to the Thessalonian church.
1 Thessalonians 4:9-10
9 But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.
10 And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren whic ...
