When I was a kid, I discovered Scratch/Sniff stickers - and I thought they were the greatest thing since sliced bread. Do you remember them? Stickers that when rubbed offered smells like fresh-baked cookies, strawberries/bananas. Of course, as a precocious little boy, my favorites to giveaway were the stickers that smelled like wet dogs, garbage, onions, and B.O.
DYK Scratch/Sniff items were invented by accident in 1965 when Gale Matson, an organic chemist for the 3M Company, was in search of a way to make carbonless paper. Using micro-encapsulation, his team stumbled across a means to hold scented ink on paper. They learned that when these micro-capsules were gently rubbed, they release a chosen scent.
When I read Matthew 6:1-8, I think of Scratch/Sniff - and how Jesus said, there’s nothing that smells worse than a smug, self-righteous religionist.
1 Be careful not to practice your righteousness before others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. But when you give, do not announce it w/ trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard b/c of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what yo ...
