Galatians 3:10
Oh Foolish Galatians! Or how the Church is duped!
1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
Before I continue, I think it would be wise to define the word, duped, since it is very critical to the understanding of the entire message.
• Dupe n. 1. A person who is easily deceived. 2. A person who is the tool of another person or a power.
• Duped v. To cause to accept what is false, especially by trickery or misrepresentation.
I am certain that no one would consider themselves to be duped; and some would not even consider even the possibility of being duped. But the fact remains that a great many people and so-called churches are. As we study this text, I want you to keep all of this in mind. I believe that if we approach this study with an open heart, and not with prideful resistance, we may actually learn something that will keep us from staying fools or being fools! With this in mind, let’s go right into the background and the text itself. First, the background. Paul has been defending the gospel of grace from the very beginning of the letter, from the point of view of his own experience and calling. He has insisted and proven that God has called him rather than man, and gave him the message of the gospel, in spite of the ministry and preaching of the established apostles. Now Paul begins to shift gears and re-explains the gospel to the experience of the Galatians, and how justification by faith in Christ Jesus has affected their lives and their own experience; and that a shift to legalism is senseless and needless. In simpler words, they were willing dupes. So by looking at the text, what are the trademarks of a church or individual that is duped?
