Proposition: Christians today have the hope of heaven to encourage them in the trials of life.

Purpose - I want to encourage believers to live holy and surrendered lives.

I want the Holy Spirit to bring the lost to repentance and new life.



INTRODUCTION:

The atheist Who Misses Heaven

Simon Davis, writing for Religion News Service, tells us, ‘‘Since atheist blogger Martin Hughes left Christianity, he hasn’t missed believing in God or in hell. But he does miss heaven.’’

Hughes said, ‘‘I wish that there was one to go to, and that’s the truth.’’ He went on to say he knows his view is not ‘‘atheistically correct.’’ But he says that in his own version of heaven, he would ‘‘understand everything.’’ There would be ‘‘deep, rich happiness that feels like Mom’s sweet potato pie on Thanksgiving.’’



I) HEAVEN WILL BE GOD’S NEW CREATION - VS. 1-5

Context - passage from last week - The old creation is destroyed. Now, after the Great Judgment of mankind, all is made new.

This is a recreation. God restoring or resetting this universe back to his original design.

This is the culmination of God’s great cosmic plan revealed to us in Scripture. This is moment that all creation longs for. John was given a glimpse of it.

‘‘I saw the Holy City, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. Prepared as a bridegroom for her husband.’’

I love that imagery. One of beauty.

‘‘I am making all things new.’’ This is perhaps the best part for me. You see, I don’t know about you, but I’ve never really been satisfied with myself.
